Change of Oxidation Mechanisms by Laser Chemical Machined Rim Zone Modifications of 42CrMo4 Steel

The oxidation mechanism of metals depends, among other factors, on the surface integrity. and rim zone properties are often determined by manufacturing process that was used to machine material. Laser chemical machining (LCM) is a uses laser radiation as localized selective heat source activate reaction between an electrolyte metallic surface. objective this work first investigate how different LCM processes affect 42CrMo4. For purpose, chemistry analyzed EDS XPS, phases residual stresses XRD, morphology investigated SEM. Second, influence these modified zones steel at 500 °C in air be demonstrated tests situ XRD subsequent SEM/EDS investigations. A decisive oxides formed 42CrMo4 during electrolytes (NaNO3 solution H3PO4) two powers high-temperature demonstrated. These were supposed act nucleation sites for oxide layer formation led overall increase thickness after compared non-LCM-processed surfaces.
